The Champions of Pleasure (ΑΝΔΡΕIΟΙ ΤΗΣ ΗΔΟΝHΣ)

ΗDV, 17 min 35 sec, 2016

The historian Triantafyllos Manousakis celebrates and arguments in favor of a national narrative articulated around the –sometimes historically accurate and sometimes partly or wholly invented– homosexuality of its eminent figures. The video conference entitled “The Champions of Pleasure” comments on censorship practices that are meant to wipe out certain aspects of sexuality and, consequently, of sex, race, language, and so on and so forth.
Such practices are part not only of the dominant national narratives but also of the attempts to replace these narratives with similar ones. Within a neo-conservative Greek and more broadly European context, the majority of the citizens seems to support rather than to question this very kind of dominant narratives, that is why this kind of discussion seems to be urgent.

'The Champions of Pleasure' is part of the ongoing project 'The Poem Begins With The Unloving Sun' by Panos Sklavenitis.
